Japanese Language Programs Remain Strong in Michigan
January 25, 2013 - The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit recently completed its annual survey of Japanese language education in the State of Michigan confirming that Japanese language programs continue to have a strong presence at both the K-12 and college levels.
In Michigan, there are 36 high schools and 20 elementary and middle schools that offer Japanese language courses with a total of 4,377 students in the state enrolled at the K-12 level. In addition, there are 17 colleges and universities offering Japanese language programs with 2,145 students enrolled.
“I am so pleased to notice a trend of Japanese language enrollment remaining strong right here in Michigan. I have met many of these students and have always been impressed with their sincere enthusiasm in terms of their language studies. I have no doubt that when these students eventually graduate with a working knowledge of the Japanese language, they will have many career opportunities presented to them right here in the state.”—Consul General of Japan, Kuninori Matsuda.
